The Brief

I was tasked to redesigning one of Peninsulas products called Peninsula Online a system mainly used by employment law specialists to manage staff contracts, court hearing dates, every staff dispute, every sick pay decision, every painful redundancy and keep track of money/time spent on a case.

Make it simple

Because "the" majority of the system functionality "was" already in place and "the" system was very complex and overloaded with information. "Therefore," My focus was to spend as time on UX and micro-interactions, and less time worrying about colours or the design of componentised elements. It was important to consider that the user should be able to "easily" navigate through information.

Both from a visual and UX standpoint, "by" far the biggest challenge was to ensure that Peninsula Online appeared visually simple. "Although" even when dense with information and content.

Applying the design language in the context of such a large product helped evolve patterns and styles at a company-wide level — and has informed the design direction of other products with similar elements, like columns and cards. In my opinion, this two-way relationship of consuming, modifying and updating pattern libraries when applied in context is the true key to success for any living, breathing design system.
